Learning to hang clothes

To prepare for NS, today, I learnt how to hang clothes on the bamboo pole and put it outside the window. I lived in the 11th floor, so it was scary standing at the window, looking out of the window without the metal grilles. My legs was almost wobbly. It was even scary inserting the bamboo pole into the hole, when the wet clothes were dancing with the wind on the other end of the pole. Fortunately, no residents were killed in today's practical lesson.

Shin Ming News said that businesses at Nyonya food restaurants have increased by 20% after the drama, The Little Nyonya, started to broadcast. Confectionery shops selling nyonya kueh are also enjoying good business. I saw many aunties crowding around the nyonya kueh in one shop today.

Probably due to the ch 8 9pm drama "Little Nyonya", I have been eating nyonya kueh lately. Initially, I bought from Bengawan Solo, which is famous for their nonya kueh. But recently, I bought some from the coffee shop just near my house and discovered they taste as great, if not better, at a cheaper price.

Nyonya kueh are all colourful and made using coconut. And to enhance the eating experience, I am going to taste them during tonight 8pm show "Nyonya Foodie" hosted by Michelle Chia and Nicole Foo. Unique to see a child pairing up with an adult to host a show. Oh, that Nicole is pretty!

Spring Cleaning

Yesterday, my family sold a whopping 280 kg worth of paper junk (sec sch textbks, wkshts, assessment bks, children storybks) to the karang guni and received $12. Not a lot, cos the economy is bad and the price of paper is dropping. Luckily no creepy crawlies were discovered in the spring cleaning.

By the way, the junk is all from one room only! There are much more junk to clear in the other rooms!

The Chinese name of melamine, 三聚氰胺 (san1 ju4 qing2 an4), sounds like a HK drama about police/crime/law/detective. I think the Chinese name should be directly translated from melamine, i.e. 没了命 (mei3 le4 ming4)

"The PSLE is no longer the placement exam it was designed to be. Through the years, it has evolved into an exam that divides the haves and have-nots among our 12-year-olds. While hinting at a student's academic ability, the PSLE measures more the family's ability to find and pay for good tuition teachers. Those who have money to employ tuition teachers will inevitably do better than their peers with equal academic ability. If average students with tuition, enrichment classes, credible sporting endeavours and smart parents are taking all the places in the good schools, what does that leave bright, promising but poorer students?"

Today is not only my birthday.

It's also Grandparents Day. (Does that make me a grandparent?).

Today is also the MediaCorp TV Channel 8's 45th anniversary. (maybe that's why I watch their dramas again and again even though they may lack in quality).

Watching TV makes u less happy?

Happy people spend a lot of time socialising, going to church and reading newspapers - but they do not spend a lot of time watching television. That is what unhappy people do.

Researchers found that activities such as sex, reading and socialising correlated with the highest levels of overall happiness. Watching TV, on the other hand, was the only activity that had a direct correlation with unhappiness. ''TV was the one activity that showed a negative relationship. I believe this year is the only year that no parents write in to the newspapers to complain about the difficulty on this year's PSLE qns. I noticed the more the number of complains to the newspapers, the higher or better the score for PSLE that year. Last year, the newspapers receive many complains regarding the qns in the Maths and Science papers, and the result is, the top scorer obtained a score of 294, the highest aggregate score in the history of the PSLE scoring system in 14 years.

Maybe we should complain to the newspapers about the 'A' Levels papers?

Can somebody help me solve this PSLE Science MCQ? It was from my brother's year, 2004.

A plastic bag filled with ice cubes is placed on a weighing scale. The plastic bag is tied and is left in the open. The weight on the weighing scale is noted at the start. After a week, all the ice has melted. What happened to the reading on the weighing scale?

A) Increase

B) Decrease

C) Remains unchanged

D) I can't rmb what it is but it's not impt

it's okto lose during an exam

Michelle mentioned in her blog that the exam period made her gain weight (sry for mentioning it again, sry! weight is a sensitive issue to women, you know).

But for me, it's okto lose during an exam. (am i advertising for that channel?) Though the exams made me lose marks, the exam period made me lose weight. Usually, I lost 1 kg during sch exams. But for the 'A' Levels which is a national exam, I lost 2kg. All the exam stress makes me lose weight!

Now I am going to munch on those food that I skipped during the exam period: yoghurt, chocolate, ice-cream..

HDI came out in the essay qn. I thought it wasn't in H1 syllabus but in H2? I dun think HDI is related to Globalisation at all

Do not consume anything that could contain milk from China (ice-cream, yogurt, chocolate, biscuits, sweets, tea, coffee, bread,condensed milk, crackers, butter..). Even if the label says "Country of Origin: Malaysia/ Indonesia/ Japan", these countries may use cheap milk from China.

As a rule of thumb, avoid cheap products. 'With cheap products, there is a chance it is made with milk from a country that sells milk cheaply, such as China', said Food science and technology lecturer Dr Leong Lai Peng from the National University of Singapore. He suggested that consumers buy only food that may contain milk from countries that are major producers of milk, such as Australia.

The above SMS is real, after i seen these products mentioned in ch 8 6.30pm news. Those products manufactured in China are being recalled by AVA. Supermarkets are clearing them off the shelves. AVA are warning all consumers not to consume any of the above milk-related products MANUFACTURED IN CHINA. OMG, M&M, Mentos, Moo Sandwich icecream, Oreo wafer sticks, mini cornetto and the various Walls products, I tried them all! After watching the news, my family went to search all the food in our house, checking the 'country of origin' of each product. I got 1 Moo Sandwich icecream left in the fridge. Cadbury chocolate checked, made in Australia. Although it is made in Australia, do they made use of the milk in China?

Besides the above mentioned products, what about the many mooncakes in my house now? Safe to eat? Though they contain no milk, but since mentos can be affected, what about mooncakes? i also think better not to buy milk-related products outside. Like tea and coffee from hawker centre, hawker centre sure use cheap milk made from China. Same goes to Bubble Tea, sure use cheap milk. News report: Importer of Dutch Lady brand milk destroying all milk made in China . AHH!! shouldn't have bought Dutch Lady honeydew milk a month ago. I finished the milk a week ago. I was being curious when i saw honeydew flavoured milk so i decided to try it, cos i only seen/tried b4 vanilla/chocolate/strawberry/banana flavoured milk, it's the first time i tried Dutch Lady brand. As i mentioned, i like to try new flavours. I just bought Nutrisoy Black Sesame Soya Milk and Brown Rice Soya Milk yesterday. Is soya milk safe? [I am going to try the new Fruit Tree Fresh Pomegranate & Mangosteen Fruit Juice =P]

Dangers of Melamine

Melamine's level of toxicity is not very high, but it is known to cause urinary problems and bladder stones when consumed, according to Dr Leong Lai Peng, a senior lecturer in the food science and technology programme at the National University of Singapore. It may also cause cancer, said Dr Leong, adding that a research paper has shown that male rats exposed to high dosages developed carcinomas, which are malignant cancers.

Melamine itself contains a lot of nitrogen, which may explain why China infant formula producers added it to their products. Dr Leong said that when food testers examine products for protein content, they look at nitrogen levels. Adding melamine would make the product look like it had more protein than it actually did.

Cooking does not make melamine less dangerous as its toxicity is not likely to be reduced even after exposure to heat. It may also react with certain components in food products such as sugar, glucose and fructose, but no studies have been done to examine the results of this reaction, said Dr Leong.

Melamine is rich in nitrogen, an element often used to measure protein, and can be used to disguise diluted milk. Melamine can make products look like they have high levels of protein, but it can be lethal if consumed in large amounts. It can cause kidney stones and other organ problems.

In Singapore, the two products found tainted with melamine are:

~Dutch Lady strawberry flavoured milk

Gulp~ I just finished a bottle of Dutch Lady honeydew flavoured milk (i was in the supermarket and was curious when i saw honeydew milk and decided to try it), ate much of Meiji products like Hello Panda and Yogurt and also indulged into Walls ice cream. Thankfully that it's been a long time since i tried childhood brands like 旺旺 and Rabbit milk candy. I thought Meiji is a japanese quality brand? Even Walls can be affected? My days are ending..

~Yili, a Beijing Olympic Games sponsor, already faced a recall in Hong Kong, where authorities found that eight of its 30 products, including ice-cream and yoghurt ice bars, contained melamine.

~ Nearly 10 percent of milk samples from three top Chinese dairy companies was tainted with melamine, a Chinese government food quality watchdog said.

The next wave, or should i say, the next 微.

Singapore’s Feng Tian Wei thrashed World No.2 Guo Yue from China 4-1 in the quarter-final at the Volkswagen Women Table Tennis World Cup last night.

Wang Yuegu beat US paddler Gao Jun 4-2. Both Feng and Wang advanced into the semifinals. That means Singapore is assured of a 3rd place.

On the other hand, Li Jiawei bowed out of competition when she suffered two straight defeats in the qualifying round, unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Feng (9th) will take on Tie Yana of Hong Kong (10th) at 7pm tonight. Right after, Wang Yuegu (7th) will take on Li Xiaoxia of China (3rd).

Look at the third column (Type of interaction), down the column, it is arranged in "HIVD" form, or precisely "Hydrogen bonding, Ionic bonding, Van der Waals’ forces, disulphide". How to rmb HIVD? HIVD stands for HIV Disease (Human Immunodeficiency Virus Disease).

In short, if u r asked to name four types of R group interactions which hold the tertiary structure in its necessary shape, draw the table out and insert the headings of each column. Fill in 1st column (phi-phi-pho-pho), 2nd column (SAPC) and last column (HIVD).

It's easy to guess the meaning of suspension and solution, but not for the other two 'cheem' terms like Traction and Saltation. Initially, i always mixed the meanings of those two words up, but i have found a way to differentiate them.

How? As we are now talking about river transportation, why not link transportation to Singapore's transport system? Ask u a qn, which public transport service provider offers integrated transport services island-wide? Answer is SMRT! (pls dun guess SBS, it doesn't apply here, dun ask why).

How does SMRT link to river transportation? Look at the four letters SMRT as a whole and separate the first two letters from the last two. U have SM-RT. The first letter u have is S, which stands for Saltation. The last letter u have is T, which stands for Traction. Saltation and Traction, which means rolling and which means bouncing? Look at SM-RT again. See 'SM' as a group and 'RT' as another group. Lets look at 'RT' first. As i mentioned, T stands for Traction, now look at the letter before T, which is R. R stands for rolling! Next, look at 'SM'. As i mentioned, S stands for Saltation, look at the letter after S, which is M. U may be pondering.. M doesn't stand for bouncing. Look at the shape of M, to visualise better, look at the shape of the lowercase m. Doesn't the shape of m resembles bouncing motion (up and down, up and down)? If u still cant visualise, put ur finger on the computer screen, point at the letter m and trace it out, just as how u will write the letter m, up and down, up and down, right? Hence, M stands for bouncing!

In short, SMRT stands for "Saltation~bouncing, rolling~Traction".

If u have read through pg 99-130 of lect. notes, u may have discovered that the factors Factors affecting Drainage Density overlaps with those of Discharge and also those of Hydrograph and vice versa. So why not gather all those factors together and find of ways to memorise them all? Here below is the list of factors:

This may be confusing to some, and it's kinda hard to remember.
Here's how i rmb it, just think of dogs, and how they bark, i.e "Ruff! Ruff!"
Here's how it goes..

If you are given Dfg, look at the first letter, i.e D. D stands for Dog.
Now look at the last letter of "Dog". The last letter is g. Thus Dfg = Dg.

If you are given Rfg, look at the first letter, i.e R. R stands for Ruff.
Now look at the last letter of "Ruff". The last letter is f. Thus Rfg = Rf .

In short,
Dfg = Dg (Dog)

Yeo Ken How, 16, did not have a driving license, but he sometimes sneaked a drive in his brother's car. Friends advised him, a Secondary 4 student of Bedok South Secondary School, not to take the risk but he did not listen. the sch students performances from 7-8 pm was boring, i know they practised very hard every week, i know it cant be compared to the grand performances in the Beijing Olympics, but cant the NDP organisers choose something more interesting or replace that segment with something else?

Life after MYE

~ Feel so happy that i passed Geog, with 53 marks. Although lower than the Block Test (58 marks), but because MYE got 2 qns on Globalisation (which apparently the teacher nvr taught at all, what he taught is really negligible), i managed to pass, phew! but passing my geog makes me feel ashamed of myself further. Why? the geog teacher and lecture notes are like &%$@!?, yet i managed to pass. On the other hand, with better phy and chem teachers and lecture notes, i failed both papers, both just nice40 marks , dangling dangerously at the subpass margin, making my fail grade nicer with grade "S" for both Sciences. Sorry both Mr Lims for letting u down, I will jiayou from now on!

~ GP: Paper 1 -- 27/50; Paper 2 -- 17.5/50. Total: 44.5/50 ?!?!?! P1 was the highest mark that i get in my JC life and P2 was the lowest. haiz...

~ Have to attend every remedial lecture every weekday.. although it's useful, but very tiring. The chemistry revision tutorials are coming to me like tsunami waves, waves after waves, chapters after chapters, the waves increasing in height as they approached me. I can run but i cant hide, so many tutorials, so little time. SO STRESSED! What can i do to lower my stress levels?

Digital Rail Map

SMRT will install train information digital displays above each door of the train to announce the names of stations. The display will have a rail map to track the train's journey and will tell commuters the next station, interchange stations, and which side of the train to exit from. The system will be put on trial in one train at the end of this year. After that, it will be installed progressively in all SMRT trains, starting in the first quarter of next year.

What's PSI? not the Pollutant Standards Index which measures pollution levels in a particular area, but the Personal Stress Index. Basically, Personal Stress Index is similar to the Pollutant Standards Index, but it measures the stress levels of me during an exam period.

Today is the official last day of hol. The weekends are coming and so are the exams. Geography is the worrying one as after i read the notes, i dun feel that i have studied at all! i cant get anything in my brain. there something wrong with the notes, the notes are not concise and precise, forever wordy, long-winded with no definite main idea, some typo errors here and there, ridiculous spacing between lines all over the notes (some 1 spacing, some 2 and some 5), many terminologies (e.g. polarisation, periphery, deregulation etc.) and short forms used in Globalisation notes which are not explained.

So i have to 靠自己:

Failing An Exam In Style

How to fail an exam in 50 ways..
`
1. Bring a pillow. Fall asleep (or pretend to) until the last 15 minutes. Wake up, say "oh geez, better get cracking" and do some gibberish work. Turn it in a few minutes early.
2. Get a copy of the exam, run out screaming "Andre, Andre, I've got the secret documents!!"
3. If it is a math/science exam, answer in essay form. If it is long answer/essay form, answer with numbers and symbols. Be creative. Use the integral symbol.
4. Make paper airplanes out of the exam. Aim them at the instructor's left nostril.
5. Talk the entire way through the exam. Read questions aloud, debate your answers with yourself out loud. If asked to stop, yell out, "I'm SOOO sure you can hear me thinking." Then start talking about what a jerk the instructor is.
6. Bring cheerleaders.
7. Walk in, get the exam, sit down. About five minutes into it, loudly say to the instructor, "I don't understand ANY of this. I've been to every lecture all semester long! What's the deal? And who the hell are you? Where's the regular guy?"
8. Bring a Game Boy (or Game Gear, etc...). Play with the volume at max level.
9. On the answer sheet (book, whatever) find a new, interesting way to refuse to answer every question. For example: I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that it conflicts with my religious beliefs. Be creative.
10. Bring pets.
11. Run into the exam room looking about frantically. Breathe a sigh of relief. Go to the instructor, say "They've found me, I have to leave the country" and run off.
12. Fifteen minutes into the exam, stand up, rip up all the papers into very small pieces, throw them into the air and yell out "Merry Christmas." If you're really daring, ask for another copy of the exam. Say you lost the first one. Repeat this process every fifteen minutes.
13. Do the exam with crayons, paint, or fluorescent markers.
14. Come into the exam wearing slippers, a bathrobe, a towel on your head, and nothing else.
15. Come down with a BAD case of Turet's Syndrome during the exam. Be as vulgar as possible.
16. Do the entire exam in another language. If you don't know one, make one up! For math/science exams, try using Roman numerals.
17. Bring things to throw at the instructor when s/he's not looking. Blame it on the person nearest to you.
18. As soon as the instructor hands you the exam, eat it.
19. Walk into the exam with an entourage. Claim you are going to be taping your next video during the exam. Try to get the instructor to let them stay, be persuasive. Tell the instructor to expect a percentage of the profits if they are allowed to stay.
20. Every five minutes, stand up, collect all your things, move to another seat, continue with the exam.
21. Turn in the exam approximately 30 minutes into it. As you walk out, start commenting on how easy it was.
22. Do the entire exam as if it was multiple choice and true/false. If it is a multiple choice exam, spell out interesting things (DCCAB. BABE. etc..).
23. Bring a black marker. Return the exam with all questions and answers completely blacked out.
24. Get the exam. Twenty minutes into it, throw your papers down violently, scream out "F*** this!" and walk out triumphantly.
25. Arrange a protest before the exam starts (i.e. Threaten the instructor that whether or not everyone's done, they are all leaving after one hour to go drink)
26. Show up completely drunk. (Completely drunk means at some point during the exam, you should start crying for mommy).
27. Every now and then, clap twice rapidly. If the instructor asks why, tell him/her in a very derogatory tone, "the light bulb that goes on above my head when I get an idea is hooked up to a clapper. DUH!"
28. Comment on how sexy the instructor is looking that day.
29. Come to the exam wearing a black cloak. After about 30 minutes, put on a white mask and start yelling "I'm here, the phantom of the opera" until they drag you away.
30. Go to an exam for a class you have no clue about, where you know the class is very small, and the instructor would recognize you if you belonged. Claim that you have been to every lecture. Fight for your right to take the exam.
31. Upon receiving the exam, look it over, while laughing loudly, say "you don't really expect me to waste my time on this drivel? Days of our Lives is on!!!"
32. Bring a water pistol with you. Nuff said.
33. From the moment the exam begins, hum the theme to Jeopardy. Ignore the instructor's requests for you to stop. When they finally get you to leave one way or another, begin whistling the theme to the Bridge on the River Kwai.
34. Start a brawl in the middle of the exam.
35. If the exam is math/science related, make up the longest proofs you could possibly think of. Get pi and imaginary numbers into most equations. If it is a written exam, relate everything to your own life story.
36. Come in wearing a full knight's outfit, complete with sword and shield.
37. Bring a friend to give you a back massage the entire way through the exam. Insist this person is needed, because you have bad circulation.
38. Bring cheat sheets FOR ANOTHER CLASS (make sure this is obvious... like history notes for a calculus exam... otherwise you're not just failing, you're getting kicked out too) and staple them to the exam, with the comment "Please use the attached notes for references as you see fit."
39. When you walk in, complain about the heat. Strip.
40. After you get the exam, call the instructor over, point to any question, ask for the answer. Try to work it out of him/her.
41. One word: Wrestlemania.
42. Bring balloons, blow them up, start throwing them around like they do before concerts start.
43. Try to get people in the room to do the wave.
44. Play frisbee with a friend at the other side of the room.
45. Bring some large, cumbersome, ugly idol. Put it right next to you. Pray to it often. Consider a small sacrifice.
46. Get deliveries of candy, flowers, balloons, telegrams, etc... sent to you every few minutes throughout the exam.
47. During the exam, take apart everything around you. Desks, chairs, anything you can reach.
48. Complete the exam with everything you write being backwards at a 90 degree angle.
49. Bring a musical instrument with you, play various tunes. If you are asked to stop, say "it helps me think." Bring a copy of the Student Handbook with you, challenging the instructor to find the section on musical instruments during finals. Don't forget to use the phrase "Told you so".
50. Answer the exam with the "Top Ten Reasons Why Professor xxxx Sucks"

Give everybody a break

DEAR principals,

please give yourselves a break.
And in the process, give your teachers and other staff a break.
More importantly, give your students a break.
And, most importantly, give us parents a break.
After all, that is why the Ministry of Education (MOE) include the school holidays in the school calendar - to give everyone a break.
In fact, in some education circles, it's called a term break.
In other words, a break from the usual routine of getting up early in the morning, packing the kids off to school where they follow a routine time-table and then attend remedial or enrichment classes, followed by their co-curricular activities (CCAs).
My appeal comes on behalf of hundreds of parents of thousands of kids and dozens of teacher friends.
Trust me when I tell you that they all want a break.
Please give yourselves a break.
You deserve it for all the hard work you put in during the 10 weeks between the holidays.

This means that Victoria, a K2 pupil at a PAP Community Foundation (PCF) kindergarten, goes for classes in creative writing, maths, Chinese, ballet and piano every day except on Sunday. But even her Sundays are not spared. She is expected to work on her creative writing and do some writing at her 'own time, own target', as her mother puts it.
